Jamie Carragher aims fresh dig at Matthijs de Ligt after Man Utd howlers vs Porto

Jamie Carragher aims fresh dig at Matthijs de Ligt after Man Utd howlers vs Porto

The former Liverpool man has been critical of De Ligt's performances for United.

Jamie Carragher has aimed yet another dig at Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt following their 3-3 draw away at Porto.

United started Thursday night's Europa League clash well and were 2-0 up within 20 minutes, thanks to Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.

However, in typical United style this season, they surrendered the lead - falling behind after a goal from Pepe and a Samu Omorodion double.

De Ligt was arguably at fault for Pepe's goal and was later taken off with around 10 minutes remaining in the match.

Harry Maguire was introduced and went on to rescue a point with an impressive header late into proceedings, but it will do little to ease the pressure on under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag.

Carragher, more than anyone, knows the trials and tribulations of playing in Europe, having won both the Champions League and UEFA Cup - now Europa League - during his playing career.

The former Liverpool defender has been critical of De Ligt's performances since his arrival in England, and he took to social media again after United's draw to take another dig at the Dutchman.

Carragher reposted a clip of himself analysing De Ligt's performance in United's 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at the weekend on Monday Night Football.

“United’s rest defence is awful, it always has been behind the ball when they lose possession,” Carragher said in the clip.

“But where’s De Ligt? In every situation in that first half, two massive chances and the goal, De Ligt, a player they brought in for huge money, is completely out of position all the time.

“So he ends up having to go flying into challenges, and then you leave yourself in a situation where you can get yellow cards and red cards.”

During United's draw at the weekend, De Ligt looked unsure of himself and could be seen lashing at simple clearances, while he was also regularly caught out of position.

The subsequent draw against Porto means United are now without a win in their last four matches.

It could get even worse when they travel to Aston Villa this weekend, a side in fine form and will no doubt be brimming with confidence after defeating Bayern Munich in the Champions League earlier this week.
