Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS were reportedly forced into a u-turn after the intervention of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly forced Manchester United and INEOS into a u-turn on a decision after intervening.

In October, it emerged that Ferguson's ambassadorial contract had been axed by INEOS due to the cost-cutting measures. The club's legendary manager is said to have received an annual salary and paid £2.16 million for his services as part of a long-standing arrangement.

In a face-to-face meeting, Sir Jim Ratcliffe told Ferguson he will not receive payments beyond the end of the season but will still remain a non-executive director.

He took the news amicably but fresh reports claim Ferguson got involved with another call from United's top brass. According to Football Insider, INEOS were looking to revoke privileges afforded to families of the Sir Matt Busby’s iconic side, dubbed 'the Busby Babes'.

The relatives are regulars in the director's box but it's claimed the new part-owners were looking to put an end to their matchday presence.

However, the outlet, citing sources, states that officials went back on their initial decision courtesy of Ferguson after stepped in. Despite no longer having much involvement, it appears as though Ferguson still has a say in some matters.

In a bid to bring down costs, INEOS told staff that 250 jobs were being cut from a number of departments back in July, while free travel for staff for the FA cup final was scrapped and the Christmas party for employees also got the boot.

Consultancy firm Interpath Advisory were hired to advise INEOS and United on their business outgoings and came up with methods in which they could save money.

The club have also been criticised for raising ticket prices, with fans protesting against the Glazers and Ratcliffe's regime on Sunday prior to the 4-0 win over Everton.

In response, United said: "As a club, we have been focused on cost saving to put us on a stronger financial footing.

“This means having to make very hard decisions, including a significant reduction in our staff numbers.

“It also means looking for opportunities to increase our revenues so we can continue to invest in football and infrastructure.”

United return to action on Wednesday with a trip to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
