Paul Scholes makes his feelings clear on Erik ten Hag being sacked as pressure mounts on Man Utd boss

Paul Scholes makes his feelings clear on Erik ten Hag being sacked as pressure mounts on Man Utd boss

The former Man Utd midfielder was honest with his words on Ten Hag.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has given his verdict on whether Erik ten Hag should be sacked.

The 11-time Premier League winner has not held back with his words about his former club in recent times, having regularly criticised several of the summer signings including Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee.

Since retiring from professional football in 2013, which coincided with Sir Alex Ferguson’s final match in charge and United’s last Premier League triumph, Scholes has tried his hand at several roles in football.

First, he endured a failed 31-day stint as manager of Oldham Athletic before becoming involved with League One side Salford City alongside several of his former United teammates including Gary Neville and Nicky Butt.

Despite his failed managerial stint he did not hold back on giving his opinion on the future of Ten Hag when speaking to the Mirror, saying: “I'm not sure about giving a timescale. I've certainly said before that I've never asked for a manager to be sacked, it's not a nice thing. But, you do wonder how long this can keep on going on.

"I think the big thing from me and other people who've been at the club and fans, more importantly, they want to see a little bit of direction, a style of play that they can get behind. And I don't think at this point we're anywhere close to seeing a direction.

"I've also said before that when Liverpool won the league, when Man City won the league, you could feel something happening for them, like 3 or 4 years before that. It just doesn't feel like we're getting anywhere near, it feels like we're getting further away rather than closer to where the club should be.

If Ten Hag were to leave his post at Old Trafford it is thought that current assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is the dressing-room’s choice to fill the potential vacancy at Old Trafford.

United are without a win in three games and this week’s trips to Porto in the Europa League and then Aston Villa, who secured a historic win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, will provide further tough tests ahead of the autumn international break.
