A distraught Mason Mount looked on the verge of tears after being subbed off in the 13th minute of Sunday's Manchester derby – and many United fans have come to the same conclusion.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who joined United from Chelsea last summer in a deal worth £55 million, was selected to start just his fourth Premier League game of the season at the Etihad.
Ruben Amorim has publicly expressed his admiration for Mount in recent weeks, suggesting he is “perfect” for his 3-4-3 system.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea," added Amorim.
But on Sunday afternoon, Mount looked devastated as he was brought off in the early stages after suffering another injury setback. He was replaced by Kobbie Mainoo.
To put his injury woes into perspective, the midfielder has not completed 90 minutes in a Premier League game since January 2023, which was a game between Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

Plenty of fans on social media have expressed their sympathy for the midfielder.
One wrote: "Mason Mount subbed off at 14' due to contact-free injury. Have to feel for a player who has struggled with fitness for so long, only to pull up hurt after getting call to start in game of this magnitude."
A second said: "I know it’s easy to be mad at a player for being injury prone but Mason Mount genuinely looks just as pissed off about it as we do, I feel really sorry for the lad."
A third commented: "You really have to feel sorry for Mason Mount. He's had a horrific two years and Amorim believes in him but he just can't catch a break with injuries."
A fourth wrote: "Feel extremely sorry for Mason Mount here, you can see the frustration from doing all the work and picking up an injury 13 minutes into the biggest game he's started for United. Awful stuff."

A fifth added: "You can feel sorry for Mason Mount while also accepting he has been a massive waste of £55 million up to now. It doesn't have to be one or the other."
