Man City fans turn on one player after defeat to Celtic in pre-season match

Man City fans turn on one player after defeat to Celtic in pre-season match

Manchester City fans made their feelings clear on social media.

Manchester City fans turned on ONE player following their pre-season defeat to Celtic last night.

Man City began their tour of the United States with a defeat to Cetlic, who ran out 4-3 winners in North Carolina.

Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn bagged a brace while Kyogo Furuhashi and Luis Palma also got on the score-sheet for the Scottish champions.

Oscar Bobb, Maximo Perrone and Erling Haaland scored for the Blues.

Jack Grealish, Rico Lewis and James McAtee featured for Man City not to mention Kalvin Phillips, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United.

But he failed to impress, making just eight appearances in the Premier League for the Hammers.

And he was unable to make an impression on his return for his parent club as fans on social media bemoaned his showing in midfield.

Man City supporters also referenced Perrone, claiming he deserves more minutes than the Englishman.

One X user wrote: "1 minute in and I have already remembered how bad Kalvin Phillips is."

A second tweeted: "Phillips is so bad in tight areas that he makes Erling Haaland look like Xavi."

A third said: "Pep needs to give Perrone more game time not Kalvin Phillips. What a baller."

Another commented: "Perrone deserves more minutes on the pitch. He’s got incredible talent!"

Phillips was taken off at the break, but Pep Guardiola insists the substitution was planned.

"He's training really well and made a really good first-half," he said. "He came from an injury, that's why we didn't give him more minutes. But we'll see, like all situations I don't know what's going to happen.

"He knows the situation, and we'll see."

The 28-year-old, who was excluded from Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024, has endured a huge dip in form.

He has struggled for game-time at Man City since his £42 million transfer from Leeds United in the summer of July 2022.

A move away from the Etihad this summer has been mooted.
