Man City make incredible piece of Champions League history vs Sparta Prague but fans aren't happy

City made more Champions League history on Wednesday - but fans aren't convinced it should count.

Manchester City set an incredible Champions League record against Sparta Prague - but fans aren't happy about it.

City recorded a comprehensive 5-0 victory over the reigning Czech First League champions at the Etihad Stadium.

Phil Foden gave Pep Guardiola's side a third-minute lead, before four second half goals sealed a convincing win.

Erling Haaland scored a brace, with John Stones and a late Matheus Nunes penalty also written on the scoresheet.

City have picked up seven points from nine in their opening three Champions League group stage games.

And in securing their latest victory, Guardiola's side have now gone 26 games unbeaten in Champions League competition - beating the record previously set by Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United.

But fans pointed out a flaw in the record, with City losing on penalties to Real Madrid in last season's quarter-final.

One fan wrote: They lost to Madrid. Give it a rest."

Another said: "If they've been unbeaten for that long, they would be defending champions."

A third added: "This thing started like a joke and I still don't get it... If they're unbeaten, how didn't they win it last season?"

And a fourth stated: "They lost to Madrid. Stop this nonsense."

While City did lose on penalties, they drew both legs of the quarter-final after extra time - with the stat not counting the subsequent penalty shoot-out as a City loss.

On the other hand, United didn't lose a single tie over two legs during their run, which was only ended by Guardiola and Barcelona in the 2009 final.

Ferguson's side had previously gone 16 games unbeaten between 2001 and 2002, but didn't lift the trophy.

However, they lost the semi-final to Bayer Leverkusen on penalties in the 2001/02 season - with some fans using that argument in the City debate.
