Fans are just discovering that they have been pronouncing Erling Haaland's name 'wrong' during his time at Manchester City.

The Norway international signed for City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022.

His first season saw him smash in 36 goals and win the Golden Boot - becoming the first player in Premier League history to score more than a goal a game on the way to becoming the division's top scorer. He also secured a maiden Champions League title while also scoring the most goals in that competition.

This term, Haaland scored 27 goals in 31 games as City won their fourth consecutive Premier League title.

English football fans will have been used to hearing Haaland's name pronounced in a particular way by commentators on pundits, with a specific emphasis on the double 'a' at the beginning of his surname.

But it turns out that his name isn't actually pronounced that way in his native country.

Instead, the double 'a' is effectively spoken as a single 'ough' sound, while there is also less emphasis on the 'h'.

Finally, the 'd' at the end of his name is also silent - creating an entirely different pronunciation to what we might be used to.

If you've played enough of EA FC 24, you'll have heard how commentator Derek Rae says Haaland's name in the Norwegian form when he's on the ball.

Back in 2020, while at Borussia Dortmund, Haaland actually advised media on how to pronounce his name correctly.

The Leeds-born striker added, though, that the use of 'Haaland' isn't technically wrong, as he was perfectly fine with that being used in England.

He said: "If you're not in Norway, you can say Er - ling Braut Hå - land.

"If you're in Norway, you can say Err - Ling - Bra'ot Holland. We're not in Norway now, so you can Erling Braut Haaland."
