Luka Modric set to become co-owner of shock former Premier League club as Fabrizio Romano drops bombshell

The Modric update that absolutely no-one was expecting to read.

Luka Modric is set to take his first step into football ownership despite still playing for Real Madrid, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, who is now 39, remains under contract at Real until the end of the season.

Relevo report that Modric has expressed a desire to remain at the Bernabeu for another season and continue his playing career.

But he is already making plans for life after football - and they have taken absolutely everybody by surprise.

Romano has revealed that Modric has revealed to become a co-owner of Championship side Swansea City.

Romano posted on Twitter: "Luka Modric, set to become new Minority Owner at Swansea ... deal agreed.

"This does not affect his pro career, as he wants to continue playing for Real Madrid again."

A 77.41 per cent majority stake in the 2013 Carabao Cup winners, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2018, was sold to club chairman Andy Coleman and investors Nigel Morris, Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen in December.

WalesOnline report that a deal has been reached and that the announcement of Modric as the club's new minority owner could be made 'within hours'.

The connection between Modric and the current ownership group is unclear at this stage, nor is the amount he has invested.

The Croatian did play against Swansea twice in the 2011/12 season while at Tottenham Hotspur.

Swansea are one of four Welsh clubs currently in the EFL, with Cardiff also in the Championship alongside them.

Wrexham - who are co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney - are in League One and pushing for promotion this season, while Newport County are in League Two.

Swansea were in danger of Championship relegation earlier this season, but have pulled away from the drop zone with a good run of form under interim boss Alan Sheehan.

They currently sit in 12th place on 54 points after a 1-0 win at Sunderland on Saturday.
