Steven Gerrard Confirms New Role Weeks After Rejecting Rangers

The former Liverpool captain recently turned down a return to the Scottish club

Steven Gerrard has confirmed his next move just weeks after turning down a return to management with Rangers.

The Liverpool legend retired from professional football in 2016, following a brief stint in the United States with LA Galaxy.

Gerrard began his coaching career as a youth coach at Liverpool before being appointed Rangers boss in June 2018.

In his third full season in charge, the Glaswegian side went unbeaten to win the Scottish Premiership for the first time in a decade.

His success at Rangers earned him a move to Aston Villa in November 2021.

However, his time in the Premier League was short-lived and he was dismissed less than a year later, having won just two of the club's first 12 league games.

Gerrard's most recent managerial role came in Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq, but he left by mutual consent in January this year.

He recently entered talks with Rangers about replacing Russell Martin as head coach, which would have been a popular appointment among supporters.

According to Sky Sports News, the timing was not right for him to take the job, and Rangers have since appointed former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.

Now, Gerrard is set to return to television, joining TNT Sports' coverage of Saturday night's Premier League clash at Anfield.

The former Liverpool captain will appear alongside former teammates Steve McManaman and Joe Cole as part of the punditry team, as Liverpool take on Aston Villa.

It is a crucial game for Arne Slot's side, who have four lost consecutive league games and were knocked out out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night by Crystal Palace.

Although Gerrard turned down a return to Rangers, he has not ruled out another managerial opportunity in the future.

He recently spoke with former England teammate Rio Ferdinand about his coaching ambitions.

Gerrard said: "I felt like I had that to a tee at Rangers [with Gary McAllister and Michael Beale].

"A lot of coach changes at Aston Villa and over in Saudi, I don't think helped me from a personal point of view.

"I'd love another go at some point. I want to change a few things and improve a few things and come back fresh, with a few different people around myself.

"I'd love another couple of challenges doing this and that's what I'm working on in the background at the moment.

"A few different ideas, a few different people around me.

"Now I'm enjoying family time and doing a lot of things that I haven't been able to do.

"But there's a part of me that still feels that there's a bit of unfinished business in terms of wanting to go in and face another couple of exciting challenges."
