But Jurgen Klopp’s side ultimately did claim the victory, after Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo scored in quick succession.
Newcastle got one back against the run of play through Sven Botman, only for Salah to seal Liverpool’s win from the spot after Diogo Jota won a controversial penalty.
Such was Liverpool’s dominance during the game, Klopp’s men set a Premier League record.
Their 34 shots in the match returned 7.27 expected goals - the most created by any side in a Premier League game since Opta started recording the data in 2010.
