Liverpool fans furious as Premier League confirms referee for Man Utd clash

Liverpool fans are not happy with the Premier League's refereeing appointment for the trip to Manchester United on Sunday.

Liverpool fans have been left furious after the Premier League confirmed the referee for their trip to Manchester United this weekend.

The Reds are looking to make it three wins from three under Arne Slot when they travel to Old Trafford to play their local rivals on Sunday.

Kick-off has been pencilled in for 16:00pm, a slight change from the traditional 16:30pm slot on Sky Sports.

The Premier League have confirmed the officials for the third matchweek, with Anthony Taylor getting the biggest fixture.

Sam Barrott will be the fourth official, with John Brooks on VAR duty.

Taylor is on the list of England's elite officials and officiated games at Euro 2024 in the summer.

The 45-year-old hails from Wythenshawe, south Manchester and is said to be a supporter of National League side Altrincham.

But, not for the first time, Liverpool supporters are fuming that a referee from Manchester is taking charge of the fixture and have taken to social media to rant.

One wrote: "Manchester-based referee for Manchester Utd vs Liverpool (again)."

Another said: "Anthony Taylor has been given Man Utd v Liverpool. Oh boy..."

A third user commented: "Liverpool playing away in Manchester with a Greater Manchester based referee in charge. That's a novelty!"

A fourth complained: "Why a Manchester born is refereeing a Manchester- Liverpool game?".

A final person simply added: "Anthony Taylor, ffs man."

Taylor has refereed United vs Liverpool fixtures on four occasions since 2016 - when he first took charge of a 0-0 draw at Anfield.

He was the man in the middle for the 2-2 draw at the Theatre of Dreams, as well as Liverpool's 4-2 and 5-0 wins at the ground.

It will be the 61st time he has refereed Liverpool in his career, having officiated them more than any other club.
