Liverpool fans were left in disbelief by what Gary Neville said on Sky Sports commentary during the Carabao Cup final.
Newcastle struck first in the showpiece at Wembley Stadium, with Dan Burn, from his first call-up to the England squad, powering a stunning header past Caoimhin Kelleher at the very end of the first half to send one half of Wembley into utter pandemonium.
Alexander Isak then struck a second early on the second half from Jacob Murphy's knockdown.
But earlier on Liverpool were aggrieved early on as they felt they should have had a penalty. Kieran Trippier appeared to handle the ball in the box when battling with Luis Diaz but John Brooks refrained from pointing to the spot.
A VAR check also cleared the incident, with Neville giving his opinion on why the spot-kick was not awarded after initially feeling as though it looked like a penalty.
However, supporters were confused by the remark made by the former Manchester United captain.
One fan said: "In roughly 90 seconds, Gary Neville has gone from saying 'I think in Europe, that's a penalty' to 'That's not a penalty' in reaction to what looked like handball by Kieran Trippier in the Newcastle box."
A second added: "In Europe that's a penalty, but it's definitely not a penalty here" - are Gary Neville and Sky suggesting that there's a two tier refereeing system in place??"
A third added: "Gary Neville: In Europe, it will be a penalty, but in England, nobody would like it if it was given against you. This, in a nutshell, is why the refs are absolutely rubbish."
A fourth followed up: "'Would be a penalty in europe' / 'I agree it's not a penalty' pick a struggle Gary Neville."
A final person fumed: "Gary Neville and Mike Dean pretending that's not a penalty lmao."
According to Peter Drury on commentary, the VAR decided against giving the penalty because they deemed Trippier's arm to be in a justifiable position because it was outstretched to give him balance while running.
In the studio, pundits Shay Given and Jamie Carragher agreed with Neville that it would have been harsh to award a penalty for the incident.
