Forgotten player leaves Liverpool without playing a single match in six years as fans ask ‘who is he?’

Liverpool have waved goodbye to a player who didn’t play a single game in six years at the club.

Arne Slot has got to work replacing Jurgen Klopp with a select group of players returning to the AXA Training Centre to begin their pre-season preparations already.

The likes of Conor Bradley, Jarell Quansah and Sepp van den Berg were spotted being put through their paces by the club’s new backroom staff ahead of the new campaign.

Liverpool are yet to make a signing under Slot but the club have confirmed a forgotten first-team star has finally departed the club.

Signed in 2018 from Fortaleza, defender Anderson Arroyo has finally completed a permanent exit after not playing a single game in six years.

The Colombian will join Spanish side Burgos on a three-year contract after spending the season on loan there last year. Premier League cult hero Michu is a sporting director at the club and was reportedly instrumental in keeping the left-back.

His spell at Burgos last year was his eighth loan away from Liverpool since joining after spells at RCD Mallorca B, Gent, Mlada Boleslav, Salamanca, CD Mirandes, Deportivo Alaves and FC Andorra.

Arroyo extended his contract with Liverpool in 2022 but was unable to gain a work permit to feature in England.

He joins Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip, Mateusz Musialowski and Melkamu Frauendorf in leaving the club at the end of their contracts this summer.

There could be more exits to come however with third-choice goalkeeper Adrian expressing his desire to return to Spain despite being offered a new deal at Anfield.

The former West Ham shot stopper has been linked with Real Betis and didn’t make a single appearance in Klopp’s final season at the club.

Arroyo isn’t the only player to be denied the chance to succeed at Liverpool as a result of failing to gain a work permit.

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi waited six years to be able to play in the United Kingdom but was sold to Union Berlin before ever making an appearance.

Brazilian midfielder Allan joined Liverpool in 2015 for a fee of £500,000 but also never featured for the club due to work permit issues, eventually returning to Brazil with Atletico Mineiro where he racked up over 130 appearances.
