Jurgen Klopp held 'multiple meetings' over shock managerial role immediately after leaving Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp held 'multiple meetings' over shock managerial role immediately after leaving Liverpool

Klopp left Liverpool this summer after a hugely successful nine-year spell at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp is said to have held 'multiple meetings' over taking a shock managerial role following his exit from Liverpool.

The 57-year-old departed Anfield after nine seasons this summer and was replaced by former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot.

Since then, the former Reds boss has insisted he is set to take a hiatus from the game as he needs to recharge.

But with speculation continuing to link Klopp with other major roles, it has now emerged that he had the option for an immediate return to football.

According to The Athletic, the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager is said to have had multiple meetings over becoming the next manager of the USA men's national team.

US Soccer officials attempted to lure Klopp into the position with a dazzling proposal but could not come to an agreement with the German, who wanted a longer break away from football before making a potential return.

Instead, former Tottenham and Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has since been confirmed as the new head coach of the national side.

Pep Guardiola, Gareth Southgate and Graham Potter were also said to have been under consideration for the role before Pochettino was appointed.

Set to co-host the 2026 World Cup along with Mexico and Canada, the United States has huge plans for success under the former Chelsea boss.

Klopp, however, couldn't be convinced and his future for now, remains a mystery somewhat.

"I have said throughout that I am not 'in that moment' in terms of focusing on my own situation and this is very much unchanged," said the German coach back in May.

"The time to reflect will come, but it is not now.

"At the same time, though, it is indisputable that our final two home games will be my last at Anfield as a manager so hopefully we can make the most of the time we have together.

"For me, this means playing good football, being at one with our people.

"And doing everything we can together to make Anfield the special place and Liverpool the unbelievably incredible club that it is.

"The good thing is, for this to happen all that we need to be is ourselves and all we have to do is give everything that we have."

Liverpool ended their final Premier League season under Klopp in third place, behind Manchester City and Arsenal.

New manager Slot has made a strong start to his new role, winning all three games so far since taking over.
