Fabrizio Romano drops Liverpool transfer bombshell as TWO shock bids for player revealed

A key player was the subject of interest from another club but remains at the Premier League leaders for now.

Liverpool received two bids from a club for a key player in the January transfer window, but no deal materialised.

The Reds are currently preparing for the Merseyside derby against Everton, which will take place at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening.

They go into the fixture six points clear of second-place Arsenal and can extend the gap to nine with a victory against their city rivals.

For the most part, since Arne Slot arrived at the club ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, things could hardly have worked out better.

Slot’s side sailed through the 36-team Champions League group phase with ease and finished top of the table, which gained them automatic qualification to the round of 16.

Last week, they beat Spurs 4-1 on aggregate in the Carabao Cup semi-final but did sustain a shock 1-0 loss to Championship side Plymouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Aside from their almost perfect record on the pitch, fans will still be concerned that Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.

However, it was another player who could have exited the club in the January transfer window.

Darwin Nunez was the subject of two bids from Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Nassr, according to Fabrizio Romano via GiveMeSport.

The club sent “Liverpool two official proposals for Nunez as a big target to join the club for the number 9 position needed by head coach Stefano Pioli to play next to Cristiano Ronaldo”.

The report claims that the second bid was “in excess of €75m (£62.5m) plus add-ons”, a similar fee to Jhon Duran’s transfer from Aston Villa to Al-Nassr.

Romano explained how talks were at an “advanced” stage, but no deal materialised as Liverpool were concerned they “didn’t have time” to find a replacement for Nunez, 25.

In June 2022, the Uruguayan arrived at Liverpool for a club-record fee of £85m but has failed to repay his hefty price tag, which has caused him to be linked with a potential move away from the club.

The 25-year-old has made 32 appearances this season registering six goals and five assists but has played second fiddle to the likes of Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz in Liverpool’s attack.
