Shock club 'preparing audacious offer' for Liverpool star Darwin Nunez

Shock club 'preparing audacious offer' for Liverpool star Darwin Nunez

It would be the shock transfer of the summer.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez looks set to be the target of an audacious transfer attempt from an unlikely suitor.

Liverpool broke their transfer record when they signed Nunez from Benfica in an £85 million deal in 2022, but the Uruguayan striker hasn't entirely convinced during his two seasons at Anfield.

Nunez has scored 33 goals in 96 appearances in all competitions, including 11 goals in 36 Premier League appearances in 2023-24.

While he did make a goal contribution every 108 minutes in the Premier League last term, Nunez did miss a series of clear chances as Liverpool fell out of the title race.

In contrast to his inconsistent club form, Nunez has scored in seven consecutive outings for Uruguay, including in two victories at this summer's Copa America.

The 25-year-old will break an 96-year record if he scores in an eighth successive match when Uruguay face the United States in their final group stage match on Monday evening.

It's that kind of scoring form that has reportedly attracted the interest of Turkish giants Fenerbahce, now under the management of Jose Mourinho.

According to Ajan Spor, Fenerbahce want to recruit Nunez after missing out on the Super Lig title by a single point last season.

The Istanbul club have lost Michy Batshuayi to arch-rivals Galatasaray, but Nunez would be a huge upgrade.

According to the report, Fenerbahce have opened talks with the player's camp, with Mourinho and super-agent Jorge Mendes leading the negotiations.

Interestingly, Nunez is represented by Gestifute, an agency part of the Mendes stable.

Since confirming Mourinho as manager, Fenerbahce have signed Levent Mercan and made permanent the loan spell of former Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu, paying Atletico Madrid €8m (£6.8m).

It goes without saying that Fenerbahce persuading Nunez to give up Premier League football at the age of 25 seems extremely unlikely.
