Gareth Southgate drops hint over England future and says he won't make the same mistake as Fabio Capello

Gareth Southgate drops hint over England future and says he won't make the same mistake as Fabio Capello

Gareth Southgate's contract at England expires in December.

Gareth Southgate has spoken out about his England future ahead of his current contract expiring at the end of the year.

Southgate is set to lead England at Euro 2024 as his side are the favourites to win the tournament, which surprised Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.

His job as the Three Lions boss has been under scrutiny, however, with reports linking him with a stunning move to Manchester United.

Southgate is thought to be among the candidates to replace Erik ten Hag should he be relieved of his duties at Old Trafford.

But the 53-year-old is 'totally relaxed' about his future and won't make a decision before the tournament.

He also revealed that he won't make the same mistake as former England boss Fabio Capello.

"When I was 23 as a player, I would’ve been anxious about that. When I was 37 as a young manager, I’d have been anxious about that," he told GQ. "But I’m 53 now and am totally relaxed about it, because life will go on whatever happens. I also don't think it would be right to make a decision before a tournament."

Southgate then referenced Capello's situation when he was in charge of England.

"I remember Fabio [Capello] signing a new contract before [World Cup 2010] and everybody said, 'What the bloody hell are they doing? He should be proving himself in the tournament'," he added.

"If I was two years into the job, then perhaps I would feel differently. But we’re eight years in, and for me, all of my focus is on one thing: how do I get this team to win?"

Southgate has been in charge of England since 2016 and has led the national team to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as well as Euro 2020, where they lost to Italy in the final.
