Roy Keane makes bold choice for who should be England's next permanent manager amid Lee Carsley uncertainty

Roy Keane makes bold choice for who should be England's next permanent manager amid Lee Carsley uncertainty

Lee Carsley has sent mixed messages regarding his England future.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has picked out who he thinks should be England’s next manager.

On Sunday evening, the Three Lions got back to winning ways after Thursday night’s shock defeat against Greece at Wembley.

Lee Carsley’s men ran out 3-1 winners against Finland at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium thanks to goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice.

After the match, Carsley was again asked about his interest in taking on the England job on a permanent basis after reports claiming he wanted to return to the U21 set-up.

He said: “People are always going to try and put their chips on one side. I'm in the middle. My bosses have made it clear what they need from me.

“This job deserves a world-class coach that has won trophies and I am still on the path to that.”

Speaking in the ITV studio, former United captain Keane has urged the English FA to go for the best and try and get Pep Guardiola as their next boss.

He said: “Go after Pep, go for the best. Pep's contract is up the summer. The FA have to go for the best guy. I don't know if finances will play a part in it.

“If Lee obviously rules himself [out], and he's not interested, and that seems to be the noises coming out, then the FA better get busy and get the right man.”

When asked if he was out of the running for the England job, Carsley clarified: “Definitely not. The point I was trying to make is that it is one of the top jobs in the world. I'm not part of the process but it deserves a top coach. The players we have available, we've got a real chance of winning. That was the point I was making.

“It was the fact that this is a world-class job. This will be up there with the best jobs in football.”

The 50-year-old continued: “Whoever gets it is going to be at a high level. It is a privilege to do this job and I feel really well trusted.

“That's why it was so tough the other night to lose the game and have a defeat. The response has been good.”

England will return to UEFA Nations League action in November in what could be Carsley’s final matches in charge of the senior team.
