Lee Carsley drops bombshell on his future and the next England manager after the defeat to Greece

Lee Carsley drops bombshell on his future and the next England manager after the defeat to Greece

Lee Carsley discussed his future after England suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Greece in the Nations League.

England interim boss Lee Carsley dropped a bombshell update on his future after experiencing defeat for the first time against Greece.

After wins against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in the Nations League, Carsley was looking to make it three out of three at Wembley on Thursday night.

But without captain and talisman Harry Kane through injury, England slipped to a late 2-1 home defeat.

Vangelis Pavlidis scored a brace for Greece, including a 94th minute winner after Jude Bellingham had equalised.

Starting without an out and out striker, England struggled to create chances and were incredibly shaky at the back throughout.

Carsley's audition for the senior job had been going relatively well but the former Everton midfielder does not appear to be keen on taking the gig on a full-time basis.

Speaking in a press conference, Carsley said: "I was quite surprised after the last came when it was 'the job's mine and mine to lose'.

"My remit has been clear from the start. I'm doing three camps, there's three games left and then hopefully I'll be going back to the Under 21's."

"I said at the start I wouldn't rule myself in or out and that's still the case - I'm more than comfortable in my position.

"After the first camp [I] definitely didn't get too excited or believe too much. I'm very aware that this job is one of the best jobs in the world in terms of you've actually got a chance of winning and that's still the case."

Carsley won the Under 21 Euros with England in 2022, with a squad containing the likes of Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon, Levi Colwill, Noni Madueke and Angel Gomes - who are all now in the senior set-up.

A whole host of managers have been linked with replacing Gareth Southgate, including Pep Guardiola, Eddie Howe and Graham Potter.

England look to bounce back from the rare home loss against Finland in Helsinki on Sunday.

They are currently second in Nations League Group B2, with Greece now three points clear at the top after their first ever win over England.
