Jack Wilshere feels 'sorry' for one England player after he's told he won't play again at Euro 2024

Wilshere feels sorry for one England star who might not play again at Euro 2024.

Jack Wilshere has admitted he feels 'sorry' for one England star who's been told he won't play again at Euro 2024.

England may well have qualified for the last-16 of Euro 2024 after topping Group C, but fans and pundits have been far from impressed by Gareth Southgate's side.

England produced sluggish and dull performances in all three of their group matches, with unbalanced left side of the team and a lack of creativity up front seemingly the two biggest issues.

Southgate took a gamble by starting Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield in the 1-0 win against Serbia and the 1-1 draw with Denmark, but the experiment clearly didn't work.

Chelsea star Conor Gallagher replaced Alexander-Arnold as Declan Rice's midfield partner for the Slovenia match on Tuesday, but he was hooked at half-time during the goalless draw.

Speaking to RTE, former Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann predicted that Gallagher won't get off the bench again after his replacement Kobbie Mainoo impressed.

"Gallagher comes off at half-time. We probably don’t see Gallagher again for the rest of the tournament," Hamann said.

Jack Wilshere knows what it's like to play for England and a top Premier League club, and the former Arsenal man has admitted he feels sorry for Gallagher.

"I feel that it was harsh on Conor Gallagher that he was taken off at half time [against Slovenia]," Wilshere told The Sun.

"Firstly because it was probably our best half of the tournament. And secondly, because it didn’t feel like a Gareth Southgate thing to do.

"It will knock Gallagher’s confidence, for sure. He will have thought that this was his chance, but he only gets a half.

"Having said that, despite the disappointing result, the second half was better and Mainoo proved he is the man – or boy – to play there in future.

"He’s only 19 but he understands the game so well and knows what it needs. He is better on the ball than Gallagher and he also allowed Declan Rice to get forward even more in the second half than he had in the first.

"But I do feel a bit sorry for Conor Gallagher."

According to reports, Southgate will hand Manchester United youngster Mainoo his first major tournament start when England take on Slovakia in the round-of-16 on Sunday.
