As the match went on, Southgate again looked to his bench to try and impact the match.
Palmer was brought on for Bukayo Saka in the 71st minute before Alexander-Arnold and Anthony Gordon came on in the closing stages.

A third fan added: “Palmer needs to start next game it’s obvious. I don’t see why Saka has to make way tho, Foden and Bellingham have both been useless. One of them should be on the bench.”
Someone else wrote: “Palmer has to start, he was far better than Saka when he came on.”
A fifth commented: “Palmer offers much more creativity and unpredictability, as well as an attacking output that was unmatched this season. He has to start over Saka in the knockouts.”

Former England striker Darren Bent said: “Think Palmer has to start. So bright when he came on, positive every single time.”
Speaking about Palmer after the match, Southgate said: “He did very good. He finds space well and he makes chances and we were backing him to score at the end.
“They are young players and we are blooding them in a difficult environment. They had a good impact for us and did good things for us. Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, it was a really good move. We have to build on that. There were a lot of things to build on from tonight.”
