Edwin van der Sar’s wife has posted a video montage of the former Manchester United goalkeeper’s recovery from a brain haemorrhage.
The 52-year-old was taken to a hospital in Split, Croatia, on July 7 after first suffering from bleeding around the brain while on holiday, and he was subsequently moved to a hospital in his native Netherlands.
And 11 days after being taken to hospital, Van der Sar gave his first direct communication to his fanbase, announcing he had been released from an intensive care unit.
The former shot-stopper wrote on Twitter and Instagram at the time: "I'm happy to share that I'm no longer in the intensive care unit. However, I'm still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!"
Ajax and Van der Sar’s wife Annemarie van Kesteren have given updates on the Dutchman’s condition since he was first hospitalised, and the latter continues to chart the United legend’s condition.
On Tuesday, August 8, Van Kesteren posted a video montage, recording Van der Sar’s recovery from hospital and his return home.
Indeed, the clip includes footage of the Netherlands legend playing chess with his children and exercising in his garden, suggesting that he is making a swift recovery. The video was captioned, ’Step by Step’, and accompanied by Whitney Houston's song of the same name.
During his career Van der Sar played for Ajax, Juventus and United, while he made 130 appearances for the Netherlands between the sticks.
The shot-stopper is regarded as one of the game’s greatest-ever goalkeepers, having won the Champions League at both Ajax and United, including the latter in 2008 after a penalty shootout.
Van der Sar, who retired from playing in 2011, was Ajax's director general until he stepped down at the end of last season, saying he was exhausted after more than ten years on the club's board.
