Ecuadorian footballer Marco Angulo has died in a car crash at the age of 22, his club have confirmed.
On October 7, Angulo, who played for Ligo Pro leaders LDU Quito on loan from MLS side FC Cincinnati, was involved in a crash in the early hours.
The accident happened in Quito, Ecuador's capital, and Angul was one of five people in the car. According to The Athletic, the vehicle carrying five people crashed into a metal structure on the motorway.
Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, a defender for Independiente Juniors, and Victor Charcopa Nazareno, also died in the crash.
As per Metro, Angulo had surgery to release pressure inside his head from the trauma caused by the accident, in addition to suffering a lung contusion which required a chest tube. He died in a local hospital 35 days after the incident as a result of the severe injuries.
“It is with profound pain and sadness that we bring you the news of the death of our player, Marco Angulo,” an LDU Quito statement read on Tuesday.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts. May he rest in peace.”
In a statement, the Ecuadorian Football Federation said that Angulo "was not only a great player, but also a great team-mate".
Angulo played 16 times for LDU Quito, with his final appearance coming the day before the crash which claimed his life.
He had a contract with FC Cincinnati until 2025 and featured 30 times. On the international stage, Angulo was capped three times for Angulo - having made his debut in 0-0 draw with Iraq back in November 2022.
His last appearance for his county came as a substitute in a 3-1 win over Bolivia in June.
