Champions League assistant referee burst into tears after RB Leipzig vs Aston Villa and fans now know why

Assistant referee Alessandro Giallatini was consoled by his colleagues and Leipzig boss Marco Rose.

The assistant referee for the RB Leipzig vs. Aston Villa match burst into tears following the final whistle and here's why.

Leipzig vs. Villa played out a five-goal thriller as Unai Emery's side ran out 3-2 winners in their Champions League clash.

The visitors opened the scoring through John McGinn, who slotted home from close range.

Lois Openda levelled proceedings as he pounced on a mistake from Emiliano Martínez.

In the second-half, Jhon Duran, who replaced Ollie Watkins at the break, made a huge impression after entering the fray, curling home a stunning long-range strike to put his side back in the lead.

Christoph Baumgartner made it 2-2 before Ross Barkley's deflected strike found the back of the net to earn his side a famous 3-2 win in Germany.

After the final whistle, Villa were in jubilant mood as the Premier League outfit are just one win away from automatic qualification to the next round of the competition.

The match officials also cut a telling reaction after the result as assistant referee Alessandro Giallatini was reduced to tears and had to be consoled by referee Maurizio Mariani and the fourth official.

Giallatini fought back the tears as his outing at the Red Bull Arena marked his last-ever appearance as an assistant referee.

He not only shared a touching moment with his colleagues but also Leipzig boss Marco Rose.

Giallatini's career highlights as an official include working the 2020 Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

On Amazon Prime, host Gabby Logan relayed the news before Portugal manager Roberto Martinez hailed Giallatini's passion for the sport.

Villa, meanwhile, have now won four of their opening six Champions League fixtures this season and occupy third place in the table.

As for Leipzig, they are unable to reach the knockout stage after losing every European fixture this season.
