Fuming Brighton fans blast Crawley star for 'disgusting' reaction to injuring new signing with horror tackle

Brighton and Hove Albion are in Carabao Cup action against Crawley Town.

Brighton and Hove Albion fans have blasted Crawley Town star Jay Williams after his horror tackle on new signing Matt O’Riley.

On Monday, it was confirmed that the Seagulls have added former Celtic man O’Riley to their squad for an undisclosed fee.

A statement said: “We are pleased to confirm the club has completed the signing of midfielder Matt O’Riley from Celtic, for an undisclosed fee.

“The 23-year-old Danish international has signed a five-year contract until June 2029 with Albion, subject to international clearance.”

A day after signing for the club, the Dane was thrown straight into the Brighton starting XI by Fabian Hurzeler for their Carabao Cup tie against Crawley.

However, less than 10 minutes into his debut, O’Riley was on the end of a strong challenge from Crawley midfielder Williams.

The 23-year-old was forced off as he limped towards the touchline.

Meanwhile, Williams managed to stay on the pitch and was only shown a yellow card.

On social media, fans then spotted Williams’ apparent reaction to his challenge on O’Riley.

One fan said: “Crawley Town’s Jay Williams after injuring Matt O’Riley. Karma is coming.”

Another tweeted: “Jay Williams welcoming Brightons £25M signing in the most Crawley way.”

A third fan added: “Jay Williams you will not be forgotten.”

Someone else wrote: “Disgusting from Jay Williams, smiling and winking after injuring a fellow professional. No class.”

After signing O'Riley, Brighton boss Hurzeler said: “He plays a very specialist position; he is very good at occupying and attacking the right space. He likes making deep runs, and knows when to attack at the right time.

“He enjoys getting forward and attacking the opponent's penalty area, but he also has a good defensive instinct. That balance makes him special. He is a great character, and has a good ambition to succeed and that's something which is very important for us.”
