Hungary release first picture of Barnabas Varga in hospital after successful operation for his sickening injury

Barnabas Varga clashed with Angus Gunn in Hungary's Euro 2024 game against Scotland.

Hungary have provided a promising update on the condition of Barnabas Varga following his sickening collision with Angus Gunn at Euro 2024.

Before Hungary scored a dramatic last-gasp winner against Scotland in their Group A fixture on Sunday, Varga received urgent medical attention after clashing with Gunn.

The forward went unconscious following his clash with the Scotland goalkeeper before being transported to a local hospital.

After the match, Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai, who was seen hurrying the medical staff in Stuttgart, called for UEFA to change its protocols regarding medical incidents.

The official X account of the Hungary national team have now shared an image of their player in hospital, surrounded with friends, family and manager Marco Rossi.

They posted an image of Varga sitting up from his hospital bed, accompanied with the caption: "Led by Marco Rossi, some members of the professional staff and Endre Botka, representing the players, visited Barnabás Varga in @KlinikumStutt. The visitors interpreted the wishes of the whole team for the @Fradi_HU player."

The player's father also shared an update as he confirmed that surgery has been performed.

"Together with my wife, we are waiting for the news that Barni's sweetheart will send us," he said.

"The operation has been performed, Barni's sweetheart will provide information on our child's condition every minute if necessary.

"It is not yet known when he will be released from the hospital in Stuttgart, nor how long he will miss.

"It's no secret, the family went through difficult moments in front of the television screen, but now we can be calmer."

Following Varga's medical emergency, Kevin Csoboth scored in the 100th minute to secure all three points.

The Hungary team paid tribute to their stricken teammate following the result in touching scenes.

Hungary could advance to the next round of the tournament as one of the best third-placed teams depending on other results.
