Curtis Jones is eligible to play for another country despite England call-up

Curtis Jones is eligible to play for another country despite England call-up

Curtis Jones has been called up by England for upcoming Nations League fixtures, but he is eligible of playing for a different nation.

Curtis Jones has received a call-up to the England national team but the Liverpool star is still eligible to play for another country.

Jones, who scored the winner for Lee Carsley's Under 21s in the Euros final victory over Spain in 2023, has been in fine form for the Reds this season - playing 12 times under new boss Arne Slot.

He has been called up before ahead of Euro 2024, only to be cut from the squad when it was whittled down to 26 players by Gareth Southgate.

Jones was in the September squad only to pull out through injury, before again being included for games in October. He was an unused substitute against Greece and left the squad before the Finland game due to personal reasons.

After some impressive displays in midfield for Liverpool, he now gets another opportunity and will be desperate to make his debut in upcoming games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.

But if he does not make a senior appearance, Jones will still have the option to switch international allegiance.

It's been reported in the past that Jones qualifies to play for Nigeria through his grandmother, who hails from the African country. There has been talk of Nigeria courting Jones in the past but nothing has ever been concrete and injuries to key midfielders and his excellent form should see the 22-year-old finally represent England in the next international break.

Carsley knows him well and spoke glowingly in a recent press conference explaining his decisions.

"Curtis is an all-round player," Carsley said in his presser, as per Yahoo Sports. "He plays in various positions and he’s a player I highly rate. He’s probably one of the best players I’ve worked with in terms of his ability.

"He’s shown a real consistent level of performance, playing every week, now. Most weeks he’s at a really high level and he’s shown he can score goals. He’s a player we’ve had a lot of success with working in the past."

Southampton's Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Lewis Hall of Newcastle United have also been called up to the England senior squad for the first time.
