Bayern Munich and France centre-back Dayot Upamecano has been working with an opera singer to improve his vocal technique. Let me explain.
Back in September last year, after lots of hard work behind the scenes, Upamecano managed to earn himself a place in Didier Deschamps' squad for the first time since 2021.
The 24-year-old defender, who went on to play five games in last winter's World Cup, focused on making subtle improvements to his game during the season.

And one of the more unusual steps to increase his presence on the pitch came from an opera singer.
As pointed out by TZ's Philipp Kessler, Upamecano struggled with pain in his vocal cords before and after games.
But rather than fight through the pain, the Frenchman got in touch with an opera singer from Leipzig, who taught him to use his vocal cords more gently.

At the same time, the singer helped Upamecano increase the volume in his voice, which has improved his overall communication on the pitch.
In an interview with French publication L'Equipe last year, the defender opened up about his vocal issues.
"When I was young, I had difficulties communicating," he said. "I felt the need to work on my voice in order to command the backline. I worked with an opera singer. It was interesting. It's important to shout as a defender. You have to do it to be a leader."

Upamecano also wanted to gain an edge when it came to his speed and power, so he installed an underwater ergometer in his swimming pool at home.
The former RB Salzburg defender also hired a personal chef and fitness trainer – and it clearly worked as he continues to impress for club and country.
Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann is certainly content with Upamecano's form of late.
“Upa has developed very well. He came back in top shape," the German said.

"The World Cup was good for him, he was one of the best defenders. I hope he picks up the momentum. We need Upa in top form. If he stays healthy, he will have a very good second half of the season.”
