Lap times for 'behind closed doors' 2025 F1 test revealed and there are some huge surprises

The behind-closed-doors test took place on Tuesday at the Yas Marina Circuit.

The full lap times for the 2024 post-season F1 test in Abu Dhabi have been revealed - and there are a few surprises.

Each team named two drivers to take part in the test, which has been held in full on Tuesday at the Yas Marina circuit.

There were two separate tests, with one driver from each team taking part in Pirelli tyre testing for the 2025 season, with the other test designated solely for rookie or academy drivers.

Carlos Sainz drove in the Williams for the first time after being granted special dispensation from Ferrari, while Nico Hulkenberg stepped into the Sauber and Esteban Ocon into the Haas.

Lewis Hamilton did not take part in the test with Ferrari as he still has sponsorship obligations to take part in with Mercedes before he officially moves teams in January.

And Max Verstappen was not present either, with RB driver Yuki Tsunoda taking over main duties for Red Bull instead.

IndyCar star Pato O'Ward also racked up more mileage with McLaren as he looks to further stake his claim to become the first American open wheel series driver to move directly into F1 since Sebastien Bourdais in 2008.

At the end of the test, Twitter user @leclercsletters published the full timing screen from the Abu Dhabi test - with some surprises.

Although the times are not fully representative as teams were on different tyre/fuel runs and strategies, perhaps the most notable time is that of Sainz, who finished in second place driving what was an uncompetitive Williams on the same track last week.

Hulkenberg, meanwhile, finished fourth in his Sauber, while 2025 Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli was fifth after sharing duties with Mercedes reserve Frederik Vesti.

O'Ward was in seventh, four tenths ahead of McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, although both drivers will have been on separate programmes.

Charles Leclerc, though, was on top, recording a time of 1:23.510 for Ferrari - just under a second slower than Saturday's pole position lap set by Norris.
