Pep Guardiola provides update on Manchester City future ahead of Manchester United clash

Pep Guardiola has provided a fresh update on his own future ahead of the Manchester Derby this weekend.

Pep Guardiola has provided a fresh update on his Manchester City future ahead of the 188th Manchester Derby.

The Catalan boss has entered the final year of his current contract and there is yet to be any communication on his immediate future.

Despite growing up a boyhood Barcelona fan, Guardiola has endured a longer stint in East Manchester and puts that down to how relaxed he is at the club.

Previously, he vocalised his intent to stay at the helm beyond the end of this season, but other comments have suggested he is still unsure about the current situation.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Friday, the manager was - once again - asked for an update on his own future.

In typical fashion, Guardiola responded sarcastically: "My future is to win [against Manchester United] the day after tomorrow...

"Well, I would say my future is lunchtime, I'm starving, I didn't have breakfast and I'm starving."

He continued: "Before, when I started to be a manager, I was thinking, 'Oh next month, or next week'...

"Now I think, what a waste of energy, thinking about what is going to happen next season... I want to enjoy the preparation for United."

There's no shock that Guardiola is taking his job day-by-day, but the constant uncertainty will only increase speculation and lead to more questions being asked.

The last time he was in the same situation, Guardiola signed a two-year extension following a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and went on to storm to the Premier League title.

Concluding his thoughts, Guardiola said: "If I stay at Manchester City, perfect. And if I don't stay at City, the club will be perfect too, because I know how strong they are and how good the decisions are that they take."

If the manager decides to call time on his glittering City tenure at the end of the season, it is likely the club will already have a few options lined-up to replace him.

However, the first priority will be to tie down the most successful coach in the club's history.

At present, like Guardiola says, he will be hard at work to secure three points in Sunday's Manchester Derby.

Despite a rocky start under Erik ten Hag, Manchester United have recovered well and are certainly in flying form coming into the fixture.

Victories against Liverpool and Arsenal have put the Red Devils in a strong position and will want to continue building momentum against their local rivals.

City were impressive against Wolves in their last outing and will want to see Erling Haaland get on the scoresheet in his first derby experience.
