Boxing fans have only just realised that the term boxing ‘ring’ is incorrect given the fact it is really a square – but there’s an explanation.
Oleksandr Usyk, 37 and Tyson Fury, 36, will walk to the ring at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for their rematch on Saturday evening.
The pair previously fought back in May 2024, with the Ukrainian winning by majority decision after he came on strong during the second half of the fight to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis over two decades ago.
The ring came to Fury’s rescue during round nine of the fight after he was kept up by the ropes having been caught with a barrage of punches from Usyk.

But why is it called a ‘ring’ if it is, in fact, a square?
Well, boxing is one of the oldest sports in the world and dates back hundreds of years.
The first known uses of a boxing ring dates back to the 16th and 17th century.
Back then, Jack Broughton, who was an English bare-knucker fighter, compiled a basic list of rules for the sport.

According to Britannica, fighters used to compete without gloves and, for the most part, without actual rules.
At the time, there were no weight divisions like we see in the modern-day sport.
Rounds were used but were usually wavered, and the fight would stop once one of the combatants could no longer physically continue.

The first ring, which was designed by the Pugilistic Society, was 24 feet square and bound by two ropes instead of the modern-day three ropes, which allows more support stopping fighters essentially slipping out of the ring.
However, before the square object was introduced, spectators would gather, forming a ‘ring’ around those who were fighting.
There was often a marked circle which acted as a boundary for the fighters to stay within during competition.
The term ‘ring’ has since carried over to the sport we know today.

The reason a square is used is because it is easier to construct and can usually withstand more pressure, which comes in handy when heavyweights like Fury and Usyk fight.
