Jake Paul issues public apology over Mike Tyson fight after boxing legend’s emotional statement about life-threatening incident

Jake Paul issues public apology over Mike Tyson fight after boxing legend’s emotional statement about life-threatening incident

Paul has issued an unprecedented statement on the Mike Tyson fight.

Jake Paul has issued a public apology to boxing fans after his unanimous decision win over Mike Tyson.

Paul and Tyson went the distance over eight two-minute rounds at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas in the early hours of Saturday UK time.

Tyson started well in the opening two rounds but couldn't maintain that momentum as his 58 years of age began to show inside the ring.

'Iron Mike' was visibly struggling with his movement as the fight wore on, and he was breathing and sweating heavily every time he returned to his corner.

All three judges declared Paul to be the comfortable win. And the 27-year-old showed respect to Tyson by calling him 'the GOAT' in his post-fight interview - unlike his brother Logan.

After the fight, 'Iron Mike' took to Twitter to say that he had 'no regrets' in taking the fight, and opened up further on the ulcer flare-up on a flight that caused its original postponement back in May.

He wrote: "I almost died in June. Had eight blood transfusions. Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight, so I won.

"To have my children see me toe-to-toe and finish eight rounds with a talented fighter half my age, in front of a packed Dallas Cowboys stadium, is an experience that no man has the right to ask for. Thank you."

Many boxing fans were critical of Paul for not being able to knock Tyson out, with some questioning whether he had instead elected not to given the dominant position he was in during the fight.

In a new YouTube video in response to Tyson's emotional statement, Paul has effectively admitted that was indeed the case.

Speaking on the 'BS with Jake Paul' podcast, he said: "I'm sorry I didn't knock him out, guys. I'm really sorry.

"After I'd seen him a little bit tired, I didn't want to put too much hurt on him. But I wanted the fans to get a good experience.

"There was a point where all of my aggression and super-violence, and the 'I'm gonna knock this guy out and show him', it went away when I wasn't getting hit much at all. I love Mike."

He continued: "In the first round, I was gauging his speed. And once I got his timing pretty quick and saw how I could tag him up and touch him, the rest is pretty much history. I just outboxed him and had fun.

"[The plan] For the first three rounds, to go slow and let himself tire himself out. Jab, move, staying on the outside. Drop in some shots when I could.

"That's exactly what I did. By the third round I was in control of the fight because he was frustrated. He was hard to hit - I don't know how he could bend over that far."
