Arsenal are set to push forward in their pursuit of Lisandro Martinez, reports journalist César Luis Merlo.
The Argentine international is one of the major targets of the Gunners board, as Arteta seeks to bolster his defence, both in terms of quality and versatility. Last season, the lack of depth in defence, particularly at full-back saw Arsenal crumble in their pursuit of Champions League football.
Martinez’s flexibility, the capacity to play at centre-back, full-back and as a no.6 appeals to Arteta, who is notorious for wanting his players to be capable of performing at a top level in multiple positions.

The Ajax player of the season is the amalgamation of this philosophy, with the 24-year-old particularly capable centrally, however, Martinez also has the attributes for the maximisation of his talents at full-back, with Arteta taking note of such traits.
According to César Luis Merlo, the Gunners are keen to force that deal through as quickly as possible, claiming that the “Club will push for his signing in the coming days.”
This mantra of securing signings quickly, attacking the market aggressively to bolster the squad before pre-season starts, appears to have been fully embraced by technical director Edu and co.
With Fabio Vieira already secured alongside Marquinhos, and deals progressing for Gabriel Jesus and Raphinha, this summer transfer window feels like a coming of age season for the board, embracing the status of Arsenal as a big club, and acting as such in their transfer business.
