Wrestling fans tell WWE legend Chris Jericho to 'retire' after 'sad' footage of latest match emerges

Jericho came up against Dax Harwood at the AEW Collision event.

He will go down in history as one of the all-time greats but some wrestling fans believe Chris Jericho should hang up his boots following Saturday's match-up with Dax Harwood.

The 54-year-old, who spent almost 20 years of his career working for the WWE – where he became a six-time world champion – has competed in WCW, WWE, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, and more recently, All Elite Wrestling.

On Saturday night's episode of AEW Collision, current ROH champion Jericho came up against two-time AEW World Tag Team champion Dax Harwood in a non-title bout that sparked plenty of conversation online.

While the match delivered in regards to physicality, many brought up several mistimed moments throughout the, at times, awkward contest held at the Akins Ford Arena in Athens, Georgia.

In fact, footage of one segment in particular emerged online, when Jericho hit the referee in the eye with a far-from-convincing slap.

Here's how fans on social media reacted to the clip.

One said: "This hurts to watch," while another wrote: "Truly sad to see the former GOAT @IAmJericho tarnishing his legacy like this. You gotta know when it's time to walk away."

A third commented: "I’ll never forgive anyone from the elite for giving Chris Jericho the motivation to wrestle into his 50’s."

A fourth wrote: "The definition of "over the hill" is @IAmJericho, which is sad because, for many, he was once the GOAT. Pretty certain that when Ric Flair comes out of retirement later this year, he will move better than this."

A fifth added: "Jericho has to retire. He was a very good wrestler, but it is time to move on."

This isn't the first time fans have reacted negatively to Jericho's in-ring work of late, but the New York-born wrestler isn't done yet.

Speaking to TMZ last month, Jericho was asked what he has left to accomplish in professional wrestling.

"I mean, it's just to continue to do memorable things and to create new memories for people and continue to evolve in this business that I've been in love with since I was a teenager," he said.

"So if you're looking at facts and figures, there's really nothing left to accomplish for me. If you're looking for just continuing to enjoy what I'm doing and create, like I said, cool moments for people to remember and cheer for or boo for, whatever it may be. That's basically what I have left to accomplish."

He added: "That's on a nightly basis. Cause I don't take anything lightly and I don't phone anything in or half ass anything."
