Manchester United have been "given assurances" that Frenkie de Jong is still open to an Old Trafford move this summer, according to reports.

This comes from the reliable James Ducker of The Telegraph, who adds to the above that it would only be in the case that his salary issues can be resolved.

It has previously been reported that the Dutchman is owed in excess of €17 million from Barcelona.

This has been an issue holding the potential transfer to United up.

Ducker added to his report that this situation around his wages has become an impasse in the deal.

The player agreed to defer his wages as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and is now discussing how and when they will be repaid if a transfer is to take place.

There have also been recent reports that suggest that De Jong is unwilling to leave Barcelona.

The latest report from Luis Rojo says that he is unwilling to leave the club and wants to stay at the Spanish club.

Duncan Castles was another who mentioned the midfielder's intention to remain at Barca.

He reported on Saturday that despite an outline agreement being made for the fee of the player between the two clubs and the different efforts to attempt to make the move happen, De Jong has repeatedly stated his aim to stay in Spain.

However, the aforementioned report from James Ducker has also enforced a different angle to this situation.

It says the English club have been given assurances that the player is willing to make the move this summer, as long as his salary issues can be resolved.

While he is expected back at Barcelona training on Monday, United have also been given encouragement behind the scenes that De Jong remains open to the move.

The report also adds that sources have indicated that the Reds would not have progressed so far into a deal if they did not believe they could sign the player.

The United manager is desperate for the signing, and so United are sitting tight on the situation still.

However, sources insist that they have alternative targets that they can pursued to join if the De Jong saga reaches a point where United feel they need to walk away.

Earlier in the day on Sunday, it was mentioned by Alex Crook of TalkSPORT that two of these targets are Premier League midfielders, Ruben Neves and Youri Tielemans.
