Former Manchester United star and footballing icon David Beckham has talked about why he is such a big fan of the current England squad.
When appearing on The Overlap, David Beckham revealed that the amount of work to draw attention to social issues the current England team do outside of football, as the reason he loves the current squad.
Beckham would specifically name Manchester United star Marcus Rashford and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling as two players who he saw making huge strides off the pitch.

Both Sterling and Rashford have frequently used their platforms to battle and raise awareness to the racist abuse both they and other black footballers frequently face. Additionally, Rashford who is United’s current number ten was awarded an MBE late last year for his relentless work to help battle child poverty.
Commenting on how incredible the work Rashford, Sterling and the rest of the team do, Beckham remarked:
“I talk about these players, you know they’re more than just footballers. What I love about this generation of players, particularly in England. Is, with the power that they have off the field, they’re trying to make change off the field.”

“You know I see the work that Marcus [Rashford] has done, I see the work that Raheem [Sterling] has done, I see the work that other players have done, that are in those positions. The good that they’re doing outside of the game is exceptional. It’s really exceptional. Because they’re using their platform to be able to help other people, and to make change.”
“Because what goes on in their lives should never be going on. But the fact that they are now, helping other people and helping educate other people, into racism, into the stuff that’s going on that they go through every day, whether it’s social media, or everyday life. They are making changes, and that’s why I love this group of players and this generation.”
It’s true that many names in the current England squad have used their positions of power for good. Most recently, Manchester City star Jack Grealish partnered up with the Special Olympics GB, being named their Principal Ambassador.

Players such as Tyrone Mings, Harry Kane & Jordan Henderson were all heavily involved in the ‘#PlayersTogether’ campaign where players came together to help raise money for the NHS as COVID-19 swept the world back in 2020.
It should also be noted that Beckham is also regularly involved with both charity work and tackling social issues himself. Projects such as; 7 The David Beckham UNICEF Fund and The Victoria and David Beckham Charitable Trust make up just some of the projects Beckham is involved with.
