Tennis star abandons match mid-game following bizarre row with girlfriend

Tennis star abandons match mid-game following bizarre row with girlfriend

Tennis player Bernard Tomic retired in bizarre circumstances during his game against Yuta Shimizu in Arkansas.

A tennis player abandoned his match during the middle of the game following an argument with his girlfriend.

In Arkansas, Bernard Tomic squared off against Yuta Shimizu at the Little Rock Open, an ATP Challengers event.

He had beaten Thai-Son KwiatkowskI a couple of days earlier but then it was all going wrong against Shimizu of Japan.

Tomic found himself 6-1 down in the first set and doctors came out after he said he was struggling with illness and claimed that his girlfriend, Keely Hannah, had "tested positive for Covid this morning".

Hannah was in the stands just as the Australian was due to return for the second set when the two proceeded to have a blazing row.

He claimed that she got COVID-19 on the day of his game, while his partner disputed that and said the rest result was from two weeks ago.

"Bernard and his girlfriend just continuing to argue," the commentator said, describing the argument.

"The long and short of it, Bernie saying, 'You tested positive for Covid today', girlfriend saying, 'No, that was two weeks ago'.

"I did not anticipate having to commentate a couple's quarrel here - but here we are.

"Either way, uncomfortable for all the fans here, who are just wanting to see a little bit of tennis tonight, but I don't know that they're going to get it."

The commentator's prediction was proven correct as Tomic, a former world junior No.1, retired.

He would later test positive for COVID.

The commentator added: "All right, that does it. So, retiring due to illness is Bernard Tomic.

"Well, that's a very awkward way to end, and a rather 'Bernie' way to end, isn't it? Tough way to go out.

"Tomic now, we'll see if he's able to recover. And again, how the heck did he win that match a couple of days ago?"

Tomic and Keely have been in a public relationship since 2022.

He was once ranked No.17 in the world but has slipped beyond the top 200 and is now competing in the competitions below the elite level as a result.
