Viewers left asking the same question about Team GB at closing ceremony

Team GB came seventh in the overall medal table and were paraded at the Olympics closing ceremony in Paris.

Viewers have been left asking the same question regarding Team GB after seeing the athletes at the closing ceremony.

Great Britain's Olympians made the country proud at the showpiece in Paris, collecting 65 medals - made up of 14 golds, 22 silvers and 29 bronze.

They finished seventh in the overall medal table and were paraded at the Stade de France on Sunday, waving flags contain the Union Jack.

Team GB athletes are sponsored by Adidas and wore their attire throughout the event.

Yet for the closing ceremony, they were seen sporting shirts containing the flower of every nation in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

However, despite the symbolic meaning, the Hawaiian-style shirts made by Ben Sherman did not impress viewers watching on BBC One and many similar responses emerged.

One wrote: I’m going to say it! What the hell are Team GB wearing?"

A second asked: "Why are team GB wearing Hawaiian shirts?".

A third said: "The f*** is team GB wearing? Did they all come off a retired people cruise ships?"

Another commented: "It’s less 'elite athlete' and more 'Nigel the accountant on holiday in Majorca'."

A final user added: "Team GB’s opening ceremony outfits were SO iconic!!! The closing ceremony outfits… it’s giving themed stag do night."

Alex Yee and Bryony Page were the chosen flagbearers for the ceremony and they too were decked out in the shirts and shorts.

Team GB's tally of 14 golds is their lowest in 20 years, having claimed nine back in 2004 in Athens.

They picked up 19 golds in Beijing, 29 on home soil in London four years later, 27 in Rio and 20 in the rearranged Games in Tokyo in 2021.

Athletes representing Great Britain do not receive prize money for winning a medal as they take the same stance as Norway and Sweden.

However, British Athletics are believed to offer separate bonuses - and World Athletics announced in April that gold medallists in track and field would be paid £39,400.
