Record-breaking sprinter denied place in Olympic Games 100m after embarrassing mix-up

Record-breaking sprinter denied place in Olympic Games 100m after embarrassing mix-up

The incident has cost her a place in the 100m.

A record-breaking sprinter has been denied a place in the 100 metres at the Olympic Games following an administrative error.

The men's and women's 100m final are up there with the most-watched events at the Olympics, and that promises to be no different in Paris this summer.

However, following an administrative error, one sprinter will not have the chance to reach the women's 100m final.

Nigerian athlete Favour Ofili was set to compete in the 100m after qualifying for the Games, but she has now claimed that she has not been entered into the event.

The 21-year-old blamed the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Nigerian Olympic Committee for not registering her, and called for both bodies to be held accountable.

She posted on social media: "It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 metres at this Olympic Games.

"I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for four years to earn this opportunity. For what?

Unfortunately for Ofili, who set three African record times in the 150m, 200m indoor and 300m indoor earlier this year, this isn't the first time she has missed out on an Olympic event.

She was among several Nigerian athletes who were unable to compete at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo because the Nigerian governing bodies did not carry out sufficient anti-doping tests.

She added: "Please remember, in the last Olympic Games, I was not able to compete because AFN, NADC and NOC failed to release funds for athletes to be tested."

"If those responsible are not held accountable for taking this opportunity from me, neither organisation can ever be trusted in the future!"

Ofili added she is hopeful that she can make her Olympics debut and compete in the 200 metres.

The former Louisiana State University athlete is currently 23rd in the 100m world rankings and 52nd in the 200m.

She won silver in the 200m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and won bronze in the 200m at the World Athletics U20 Championships in 2021.
