Fans stunned after discovering how much Michael Jordan's weekly maintenance bill comes to on $80m superyacht

Michael Jordan certainly doesn't cut corners when it comes to vacation.

Michael Jordan has a lot of money in his pocket, but the amount he spends per week on his superyacht is staggering.

Not only is Jordan one of the greatest basketball players of all time, but he is one of the richest athletes on the planet.

The former Chicago Bull's salary totalled around $90 million during his career, during which time he won six NBA titles and was named the NBA MVP on five separate occasions.

However, it was away from the court that Jordan earned most of his fortune, giving him a net worth of $3.2bn according to Forbes.

The 61-year-old has earned around $2.4bn (pre-tax) from partnerships with Nike, Hanes and Gatorade, among others. It's estimated that he has made $1.6bn from Nike alone, such has been the popularity of the signature Jordan sneakers.

Other business ventures have helped too; in 2023 Jordan sold his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets in 2023, a deal that valued the NBA franchise at $3 billion.

So, what does a man do when he has so much money to play with? He rents a superyacht, of course.

Jordan likes to charter a superyacht called Joy, owned by Indian businessman Sameer Gehlaut. The 70 metre long vessel is reportedly worth around $80m.

That sounds like a lot, but Joy is no ordinary boat.

For the price of between $650,000 and $780,000, Jordan can make use of two jacuzzis, a dining room, a beach club and disco, a movie theatre, a gym (fitness instructor included), a spa and, of course, a basketball court.

There are seven guest cabins onboard with space for 12 guests, while the boat comes with a private chef plus a crew of 19 including a captain, sailors and hospitality staff.

When you consider the array of amenities on board and the wages of the staff, it's not surprising that is costs so much to charter Joy for just one week.

That's especially true when you consider the cost of fuel to power the boat's twin engines.

Joy's fuel tanks hold a whopping 100,000 litres (around 26,400 gallons) of fuel according to yachtcharterfleet.com, consuming about 600 litres (132 gallons) per hour at cruising speed.

At present, one gallon of fuel in the Bahamas - where Joy is docked - costs $5.66. That means it would cost just under $150,000 to fill one tank.

In short, it's a lot of money. But then Michael Jordan has a fair amount of it lying around.
