Dana White reveals UFC could create brand-new weight division that would delight fans and fighters

UFC chief Dana White has hinted at creating a new brand new weight division which would change things dramatically.

Dana White has revealed that UFC could create a brand new division to maximimise the talent in the ranks.

There are 12 weight classes in the UFC, eight for men and four for women.

The division varies from heavyweight to flyweight for men and women's featherweight for the female fighters.

Most divisions are stacked across the board and UFC president White has hinted at a huge move in the future to accommodate the wealth of fighters at the company's disposal.

Recently 20-year-old Julieta Martinez became the only winner of Dana White Contender Series Season 8 not to bag a contract.

That was despite her impressive performance to beat Leslie Hernandez via split decision.

The prospect competed at strawweight and White remains a huge fan.

In fact, the 55-year-old is so high on Martinez that he is even contemplating setting up a women’s atomweight division to make room for her.

White extended an invite for Martinez to train at the Performance Institute but given she stands at 5ft1 and weighed in at 114.5 pounds, he had reservations about how she would fare on the UFC roster.

That being said, he is tempted to create a new division to accommodate Martinez and many more in the same position.

Typically those competing at atomweight fight at 105lbs as part of the lightest weight class in MMA.

“As you start to talk about South America; as you start to talk about Asia, whether its China, Japan or Korea, as we keep cultivating talent in these places, we might end up creating another division,” White said, as per Forbes.

White has also said another key change will be coming in regards to the UFC pound-for-pound rankings.

They are currently voted for by members of the media but White states that it will no longer be the case going forward.

"I can’t handle incompetence, I can’t take it anymore, it’s driving me crazy and I can’t let people that I don’t believe know what the f*ck they’re talking about deal with the rankings anymore, I just can’t do it,” he fumed at the post-fight press conference on Tuesday.

“I have to figure out a solution, tomorrow I have a meeting with a group of people that are saying they have the solution to this problem.
