Following growing tensions away from the cage, the two former trainer partners' once-great relationship quickly deteriorated and they eventually had a very public divorce.
In the build-up to their highly-anticipated grudge match at UFC 272, fans were subject to some very relentless and extremely personal trash-talking between the pair.
During the bout itself, it was Covington who got his hand raised, but unfortunately their bad blood spilled over into the streets as Masvidal allegedly assaulted his fellow UFC star outside a steakhouse 14 days after their fight.

Charges were pressed with a trial set for May.
With Masvidal set to fight in his hometown of Miami this weekend at UFC 287, there's whispers Covington could be in attendance sitting cageside.
But the local fan favourite was quick to shut that down, referencing claims made during his recent run-in with the law.

"I've currently got three felonies because this b***h Colby says I gave him a brain injury, so how the f**k is he going to fight for any title?" Masvidal told the media ahead of UFC 287.
"The UFC is going to get sued if that guy goes in there."
Asked if it'd be wise of Covington attended the event this weekend, Masvidal went to town again, going on an expletive-laden tirade.

"He's an attention seeking w***e, he's gonig to be there from 100 metres away with 20 security guards," Masvidal said.
"He's going t be saying all types of crazy s**t that he's the king of this and that. He's only the king of calling cops and sucking c**ks.
He added: "I don't give a flying f**k [whether he's there].
"All I know is that he's got a restraining order on me and I have to stay 100 feet from this individual.

"I don’t even know why he would even put such a thing on me, because I’m just the coolest guy. My mind is still blown as to why he has a restraining order on me... whatever."
The 38-year-old faces two felony charges of aggravated battery and criminal mischief, to which Masvidal has pleaded not guilty to.
