Footage emerges of world's No.1 golfer Scottie Scheffler being detained by police just hours before PGA Championship second round

Footage emerges of world's No.1 golfer Scottie Scheffler being detained by police just hours before PGA Championship second round

A police officer was heard saying: "He’s going to jail and there’s nothing you can do about it."

Scottie Scheffler has been detained by police in handcuffs near Valhalla Golf Club ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship, according to reports.

The 27-year-old American, who is currently ranked world number one after wins at The Masters and The Players Championship, was due to tee off at 1.48pm BST after shooting four under in his first round.

But things have taken a complicated turn after Scheffler was detained by police on Friday morning.

According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, there was a misunderstanding with traffic flow that led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club.

"The police officer attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to Valhalla," Darlington added. "The police officer then began to scream at Scheffler to get out of the car.

"When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs. He is now being detained in the back of a police car."

Footage from the scene soon emerged online, as seen below.

As you can see in the video, a police officer can be heard saying: "Here's the thing. Right now he's going to jail. He's going to jail and there's nothing you can do about it."

Darlington, who witnessed the events unfold, went on to explain what happened.

"Traffic had been backed up and building," he said on air. "Scottie Scheffler tried to enter Valhalla Golf Club using a side median, at which point a police officer instructed him to stop.

"Scheffler attempted to continue to go, the police officer then attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car.

"Scheffler stopped the vehicle as he turned into Valhalla Golf Club at the entrance, about 10 to 20 yards from the point at which the police officer first told him to stop.

"At that point the police officer instructed Scheffler to get out of the car.

"He rolled down the window, the police officer grabbed his arm and started pulling at it.

"He reached inside, opened the car door, pulled Scheffler out, pushed him up against the car, immediately placed him in handcuffs."

A statement released by LMPD said officers had been called to reports of a collision involving a male pedestrian and a bus at around 5am.

It added: "As a result, the pedestrian received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating."

The PGA Championship later confirmed that the second round starting times would be delayed by one hour and 20 minutes from the originally published time.
