George Russell immediately abandoned his car in order to try and help Zhou Guanyu after the horror crash at the British Grand Prix.

The opening lap at Silverstone included a horrendous collision that saw Alfa Romeo's Zhou take the brunt of it in some frightening scenes.

Russell appeared to be clipped by Alpha Tauri's Pierre Gasly and that led to a collision with Zhou, whose car flipped over completely and flew over to the barriers where spectators were near.

The 24-year old was immediately concerned for Zhou and footage showed him ditch his vehicle and head over to his fellow driver, who had become trapped.

The first instinct of Russell says a lot about him as a competitor and a person.

A red flag was signalled after a mere 21 seconds of racing as proceedings came to a halt. Russell, Zhou and Alex Albon, were forced to retire from the race, which was won by Carlos Sainz.

After stretchers were required, the FIA confirmed that Zhou and Albon were taken to the medical centre for evaluation but the former was later released and took to Twitter to inform fans he is doing well after the scare.

Reflecting on the crash, Russell took to Twitter to write: "First of all, the most important thing is that Zhou is ok. That was a scary incident and all credit to the marshals and medical team for their quick response.

"Obviously gutted to end the race this way and I'm sorry for the team and the fans. Cheering LH on from the garage."

Having been told he could not continue, Russell was unable to build on an excellent run which has seen him secure five top five finishes in a row.
