Ben Foster made a heroic 96th minute penalty save as Wrexham beat Notts County 3-2 in a breathtaking National League top of the table clash but a new angle suggests he might have got off the hook.

The division's two best sides went into the game level on 100 points and it was the visitors who drew first blood when John Bostock curled in a gorgeous free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

Wrexham talisman Paul Mullin levelled matters after the break before Jacob Mendy smashed in a second to put the Dragons in the lead.

Notts County skipper Kyle Cameron headed home a leveller but Elliot Lee popped up with the winner late on.

Yet just when it seemed like the game might be done and dusted, the away side were awarded a last-gasp penalty for handball.

Cedwyn Scott stepped up instead of top scorer Macaulay Longstaff and Foster dived to his right to make a stunning stop to clinch an extraordinary win which moved Wrexham three points clear.

It was a superb save from the 40-year-old, who only recently came out of retirement. However, images appeared to show that Foster had actually come off his line when the spot-kick was taken.

IFAB rules stipulate that "the defending goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot touching, in line with, or behind, the goal line".

Technically a retake should have been taken but with VAR not present in the National League, no action could be taken.

Fans erupted with reaction, with one writing: " I wanted Wrexham to win. It's done now. But if Ben Foster is on the line, it's very close."

Another agreed: I hate to be THAT guy, but @BenFoster is off his line before the kick is taken, so it should've been retaken..."

A third weighed in: "Ben Foster was always saving that but he was off his line."

A fourth user wrote: "I love Ben Foster but that to the letter of the law is a retake. He steps off his line for sure."

A final supporter wrote to the ex West Brom shotstopper, saying: "@BenFoster don't play the whole 'fair play to Notts County' line, when you clearly have no concept of what fair play is."

Still, you just know that matchday vlog on his YouTube channel is going to be special. League leaders Wrexham are three points ahead of Notts County and also have a game in hand.
