Wrexham are seeking to sign a former Premier League striker and raid the Championship to add further impetus to their promotion aspirations.

The Red Dragons are in contention for a third successive promotion after rising out of the National League and League Two in each of their past two campaigns.

Yesterday at the Racecourse Ground, Phil Parkinson's side kept in touch with the sides around them at the top of League One with a 1-0 victory over Peterborough United.

Former Premier League striker Steven Fletcher came off the bench and produced a moment of quality to nod home the winner before full-time in what was Wrexham boss Parkinson's 1,000th game in football management.

The result means Wrexham sit third in League One and are two points behind leaders Birmingham City, and are level with second-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

Since the Red Dragons were purchased by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham have invested heavily on talent on the pitch and often recruited from divisions above to attract talent to North Wales.

It includes the likes of Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Ollie Rathbone, Elliot Lee, Andy Cannon, James McClean, Jack Marriott and yesterday's goalscorer Fletcher.

However, Marriott has been out since October after breaking his leg during training and is expected to be out for a few more months, though could return to action before the end of the season.

However, it appears that Wrexham are seeking to add further firepower to their attack and a fresh report suggests a former Premier League striker could be in line to join the club this month now the January transfer window has opened for business.

According to Football Insider, the Red Dragons have 'set their sights' on signing Luton Town's Cauley Woodrow.

Two new attackers are wanted by Parkinson's side this month and Woodrow, who played with the Hatters last season in the top flight, is said to feature highly on the club's list of wanted players.

The 30-year-old rejoined Luton from Barnsley back in 2022, reuniting with the club he left for Fulham back in 2011.

However, Woodrow has scored only six goals in 72 matches during his second stint with the Hatters, and it is also unclear if Luton would be willing to part company with the forward given Rob Edwards' side are only two points above the Championship relegation zone as things stand and have lost their last three league games in a row.
