Wharton, 21, was included in England's Euro 2024 squad and is expected to be selected by new boss Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming international break.
The report claimed that Madrid's chief scout, Juni Calafat, is an admirer of Wharton and club staff have been sent to keep a close eye on the midfielder's progress.
Aside from Madrid, it has been suggested that Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United have all previously shown interest in the youngster.

Wharton has made a total of 16 appearances across all competitions for Palace so far this season and has registered one assist.
The 21-year-old is reportedly valued at around £70 million by the Selhurst Park club, who will face tough battles to keep hold of their star players such as Wharton, Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Palace are back in action this weekend when they take on Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
