Man Utd are trying to sign player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer let go in a bargain deal ahead of the January transfer window

Man Utd are trying to sign player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer let go in a bargain deal ahead of the January transfer window

Manchester United could target one of their former players ahead of the January window.

Manchester United are reportedly targeting one of their former players ahead of the January transfer window.

It has been another poor start to the season for United as they have so far struggled in both the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League.

As a result, manager Erik ten Hag is under increasing pressure to turn the club’s fortunes around, with the Dutchman facing constant questions on whether he is the right man to lead the Red Devils forward.

With the January transfer window on the horizon, it has been claimed that United could target one of their former players, midfielder Angel Gomes.

The Englishman left United back in 2020 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the manager.

Since leaving Old Trafford, Gomes has impressed at French Ligue 1 side Lille, earning him a call-up to the England squad by interim boss Lee Carsley.

Now, as reported by French news outlet L’Equipe, United have been handed a boost in their bid to lure Gomes back to Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and there is currently no suggestion of a new deal.

As a result, Gomes will be free to speak to foreign clubs when the January transfer window opens, meaning United could offer him a pre-contract ahead of a potential free transfer in the summer.

Speaking during the last international break, Gomes was asked about a potential return to United.

He said: "I do sometimes think about where I would be now [if I stayed at United].

"I think it's normal to feel like that, but the jump and trajectory that I took, the places that I've been, what I've learnt from the different coaches along the way, the detail, effort and love they have put into my game, I don't think I would be where I am now without it.

"As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all.

"There'll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of it course it would be difficult to say no [to returning to United]."
