Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk sparked a response among fans with comments to the media after the Premier League win against Brentford.
The Reds collected all three points thanks to a dramatic Darwin Nunez double in stoppage time but the attention quickly shifted back to Liverpool's transfer policy and Van Dijk unwittingly fanned the flames.
Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's owners, have been criticised for a lack of incoming transfers under manager Arne Slot despite the team being top of the table in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
The discussion on X, formerly Twitter, deteriorated into the usual bizarre sniping about 'Top Reds' but the imminent expiration of Van Dijk's contract, along with those of Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, has understandably raised questions.

"Every win is a big result," said the Liverpool captain after their late win at the Gtech Community Stadium. "Especially when the teams around us are very strong.
"And they obviously strengthen themselves as well, probably, so we have to stay consistent, win games and perform well."
Fans took to social to have their say on Van Dijk's comments.

One fan wrote: "Yeah Van Dijk is not happy."
Another added: "The emphasis he put on “they OBVIOUSLY STRENGTHEN THEMSELVES ASWELL” give that man some players..."
A third commented: "He's crying out for some signings."
Slot took over as Liverpool's head coach last June, replacing Jurgen Klopp. The Reds are yet to bring in a player in his first January transfer window and brought in only Federico Chiesa in the summer window.

The Italian might have moved on by the time Liverpool's other summer signing in 2024, goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, actually arrives in the summer of 2025.
Liverpool fans picked up Van Dijk's message about other teams strengthening and the response on X has been predictably divided.
Some fans fall into the "Give that man some players" faction while others don't believe the captain is sending a message to FSG at all. Football is a game of opinions, after all.

The quality and resilience of the current Liverpool, described by defeated Brentford manager Thomas Frank as the best in the world, should at least give fans pause before raging about a lack of incoming transfers.
More meaningful debate is being had around the contract situation regarding Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold. Contract renewals are a tricky business for clubs and by no means as straightforward or as one-sided as fans think. Nevertheless, allowing the contracts of these three players in particular to run down unresolved at the same time was unwise on the part of the club.
That the resulting attention it hasn't distracted from their title tilt is to the credit of Slot and his players, no matter their contract status.
