Liverpool have reached an agreement in principle with Al Ettifaq over a fee for the transfer of Jordan Henderson, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Henderson had already agreed terms with the Saudi Pro League club, who are managed by Reds legend Steven Gerrard.

The next step was for the two clubs to agree a deal. Henderson was included in Liverpool's pre-season tour squad, but was left out of their opening friendly against German side Karlsruher.

The Athletic claimed that the 33-year-old, who is the Reds captain, was offered a 'life-changing' contract by the Saudi Pro League club.

It was added that the proposal would have quadrupled his current wage.

Now, Romano has given a key update on developments.

Romano gives update on Henderson talks

According to the transfer specialist, Henderson is now one step closer to leaving Anfield and making the move to Saudi Arabia.

He wrote: "Liverpool and Al Ettifaq just reached an agreement in principle on fee for Jordan Henderson - here we go!

"Henderson already agreed three year deal last week, documents to be checked then time to sign and move to Saudi.

"Steven Gerrard, waiting for JH."

The signing of Henderson will represent a first marquee transfer for Gerrard at his new club, with the pair having played alongside each other at Liverpool.

For Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp, a fresh delve into the transfer window could be a possibility, despite the arrivals of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

Henderson's departure will signal the end of a 12-year spell in Merseyside, during which he lifted a Premier League and Champions League title as club captain.

He could be followed through the exit door by Fabinho, with the Brazilian having been subject of a £40 million bid from fellow Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad.

The Reds are in talks with Nuno Espirito Santo's side over a transfer of the midfielder, who was not included in the squad for the club's pre-season training camp.

Fabinho has spent five years at Anfield, also playing crucial roles in the club's Premier League and Champions League triumphs.
